In AD224, Imperial Investigator Quintus Valerius is summoned from Rome to Britannia by his old companion-in-arms, Governor Gaius Trebonius.

Trebonius wants Quintus to investigate fraud at the silver mines he is overseeing.

But on his journey to Somerset in the south-west of the isle, Quintus hears rumours of a Druid uprising.

And when he encounters his scorned ex-lover, he suspects she may have something to do with it.

When Quintus finally reaches the mines, he finds himself under attack. He realises a dark conspiracy could be behind the fraud.

And the stakes are raised when a potential witness is murdered.

Could the Druid Rebellion be linked to the case? Is Quintus’s own life in danger?

And will his loyalty to the Governor prove to be his downfall?

The Governor’s Man by Jacquie Rogers is published on 4 September, 2026.

Jacquie is joined by two other Roman-era novelists to talk about how small discoveries make big changes in their stories in our new Historia feature.

If you enjoy historical fiction there’s much more in Historia’s list of 190 books coming out in 2026.
